  Getting around in Germany

From Peter Sonne and Linda Bird-Sonne (PHL)

Below is a wonderful travel tip that Linda and I found out about in our recent trip to Germany.

Although originally we planned on flying in to Munich, we ended up changing to Frankfurt at the last minute since the Munich flight was full and we had a choice of two flights to Frankfurt from PHL.

Needless to say, we needed to take the train to get to our final destination.

One of the best ways to get around in Germany are the regional tickets from the German railroad system.

These tickets allow you basically unlimited 2nd class travel on all the trains, S-Bahns, and U-Bahns within a region (no ICE trains), usually starting at 9 a.m. The deal is good for the whole day for two adults and up to three other family members for one low price (somewhere in the range of 27-30 euros).

So if you are in Munich or Frankfurt and just want to do a day trip to another town, this is usually much cheaper than paying the per person round trip fares.

This is also handy if you want to relocate to another region from your arrival airport.

A tip if you are going long distance would be to buy tickets to just get you into the next region (especially if traveling before 9 a.m.), and then buy the regional ticket for the other area (or buy two regions).

These tickets are readily available at the automated kiosks, which have an English setting and also take credit cards.

More information on these tickets can be found on the web at the following address:

http://www.bahn.com/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/laender-ticket.shtml

There is also a weekend-only ticket good for a whole day (Saturday or Sunday) and for the entire country. So if you are relocating, plan on doing it on a weekend.
